When I moved to New York, I tried one more time. It was my cousin’s idea to go up on the High Line, where there are lots of people—a very beautiful place, and tailor made for this because it’s a small path where people have to walk by, in a pretty rich shopping area, so that people have money.

People have asked: Why not bring a computer and e-mail stories to people? I write faster on a computer, but I don’t second guess myself on the typewriter. There’s no time to. It’s immediately permanent, with the ink striking the page, so there’s something in it that clicks something in my mind that I just don’t have on a computer. The sound of it is not jarring, but surprising: “Is that a typewriter?” You don’t expect it, so it’s like a siren’s call.

The act of typing gives people another point of entry because they haven’t seen a typewriter in a while, so there’s the intrigue of being able to talk to them about it. People have something to say. I get a crowd collecting around me, talking about typewriters and stories.
